The Opportunity
Monash is seeking an outstanding academic for appointment as a Professor of Materials Engineering and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals at its Clayton campus. Monash is the lead institution in the ARC Centre which is a national research centre in light metals involving all the leading university-based research groups in this area in Australia. The appointee will provide leadership and foster excellence in research, teaching, professional activities and policy development in the area of light metals in the department and in the centre. The department has a strong record in light metals research over a long period of time and, as well as research within the centre and by academics individually, is involved in the CAST Cooperative Research Centre which undertakes industry-focused light metals research.
The appointee will have primary responsibility for the strategic direction of the research portfolio of the centre and for the ongoing development and overview of that portfolio. He/she will be responsible for promoting cohesion within the centre and fostering an environment for creativity and scientific excellence, as well as identifying opportunities for partnerships and research collaborations, both internally and externally.
The successful candidate will have: a research doctorate in a relevant discipline; an international reputation for outstanding research; a proven record of obtaining external grants for research and of successful supervision of postgraduate research students; proven excellence in teaching; and highly developed skills of leadership, networking and management.

Duration
The professorial appointment will be continuing and will include the role of Director, ARC CoE for Design in Light Metals, fixed term until 31 Dec 2013.
